Home Improvement

Before you contract to have a home built or to have repairs or remodeling done on your home, there are certain things you should know.

All residential and general contractors in the State of Georgia are required to be licensed through the State Licensing Board. Sub-contractors, such as plumbers, electricians and heat and air conditioning contractors are regulated by the Georgia Construction Industry Licensing Board. You can verify that a general contractor or sub-contractor has a valid license by going to the the Georgia Secretary of State’s website (sos.ga.gov). From the main menu, choose "Licensing," then click on "Licensee Search." Please note that certain specialty occupations such as roofers, painters, drywall contractors, and repair handymen are not required to be licensed by the state.

You can also check with your county or city government to make sure your contractor has the proper licensing, or to report someone operating without the required local license.
