Builder damaged my yard
Dear Consumer Ed:
I have been dealing with a builder for over a year regarding damage done to my yard after they graded the home next door to mine. The damage has caused two sinkholes in my yard, but the builder maintains that there is no problem. What can I do?
Consumer Ed says:
Hopefully you have been documenting the damage by recording dates the damage became apparent and by taking photographs of the damage. If not, you should do so immediately. You should also keep records of all communications you have had with the builder. The next step would be to obtain estimates of the cost to repair the sinkholes. Since your situation involves real estate and construction, the matter can become relatively complicated so you should consult with an attorney as soon as possible to determine the best course of action. If you cannot afford an attorney but have documentation to support your claim, you may be able to file a claim against the builder in your local Magistrate Court as long as your claim does not exceed $15,000.
